Featured Band Discovery: Strange Americans

Just a few hours ago I went down into the madness that was Denver Day of Rock to go see and visit with the guys in Air Dubai. Monika had a family day so I was all by my lonesome which doesn’t happen too often at music events, this was actually the first time at a festival I went solo. Of course with the people who don’t know how to walk quickly, children, and drunks it was a lively time in the sun (not complaining because I actually really enjoy festivals) but anyways, getting onto subject….as I was waiting for Air Dubai to finish setting up, I was sitting on the ledge of stage left and as usual there was a guy handing out fliers. As expected at these sort of outdoor festival things, I always end up with at least 5 stickers to take home, a couple handmade EP’s and even sometimes a  woven bracelet. After Air Dubai played an hour long set that, to say the very least, had the crowd humming, I ran around with some friends for a little bit and eventually came home.

Going through all of the stickers and fliers that I got today, most of them were from bands I already knew – actually all of them but one were. A medium-sized square sticker that was completely plain except for a stereo (or maybe a briefcase but I’m guessing stereo) with a black label on it “Strange Americans”. I didn’t talk to the guy that gave me the sticker, usually when people give me free things I take them and just smile and nod because it usually looks like they’ve been fighting off people who have told them to screw off already 30 or so times. Naturally I wasn’t going to not look up something that I hadn’t heard of, typed “Strange Americans” into the search on Facebook and whadda ya know; a band popped up. Honestly I always expect the absolute worst when individuals tell me to “check out their band” or “take this sticker with my bands name on it” because it’s safe to say that there are more than a few really awful bands out there that are simply not going to make it. Shockingly, none of my friends have even clicked “like” on this band that I could see, regardless I still decided to listen to them. Guess what? I like Strange Americans, a lot. I have no idea where these guys are from but they deserve to have more than 470 likes on Facebook. Their sound is a hell of a lot different than most of the bands that I’ve heard, it’s pretty evident that they’re on a different spectrum but in the best possible way. Their Americana sound is something that really, really appeals to me – possibly because I’m a huge Springsteen fan. Now, I’m not comparing these gentlemen to The Boss because, of course, nobody beats Bruce, but I would pay to see Strange Americans live. Strange Americans are what would be created if Lucero had a baby with Ryan Adams’ album “Fire and Ashes” and had Springsteen playing while in the act.

The lead singers voice isn’t raspy like Ben Nichols but it’s extremely bold, it makes you really listen to what he’s singing about. It has that sound that reminds you about good things in life, like beer and nice weather. It isn’t boring, it’s not haphazard, doesn’t drag, and most importantly it’s put together very, very well. If the men in Strange Americans have never been in a band before, or this is the first band that they have been in – they fooled me. They’re completely on point with their sound, they found exactly what works for them and it works damn well.  They’re planning on releasing an album on June 30th with a show at the Hi-Dive. I suggest everyone check these guys out if a folky kind of rockish sound is something that appeals to you and if it isn’t, check them out anyways because they’ll probably change your mind. If anyone else has heard of these guys, please let me know because I’m still trying to figure out how I just now found out about them.

Like I said, check out Strange Americans, it’s definitely a sound that’s different and something that’s perfect for the summer season, like cold lemonade on a hot day – so refreshing.

Fighting For Fessler: An Event Of Support

An extremely important event is happening this Thursday, May 10th at 7:00PM at The Marquis. Of course all of the local music events that we support are held very closely to our hearts but this Thursday, with the help of our friends in DellaMonroe MonroeMr. Right, and The Marquis Theater, we’re able to support something that is literally going to be life changing. “Fighting For Fessler” is an event in support of a good friend of mine, Luke Mehrens’, girlfriend Abby Fessler. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting this beautifully strong woman a few times, but last month Abby was unexpectedly diagnosed with  T-CELL Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (T-ALL). T-ALL is a cancer of the bone marrow and blood that progresses rapidly, malignant white blood cells continuously multiply and are overproduced in the bone marrow. She is currently receiving treatment at the Aurora Medical Center.

It progresses rapidly and that’s why it’s so important to get the best treatment possible, as soon as possible. We’re hoping we can help with that. Thanks to the kind hearts at The Marquis Theater, all of the proceeds from ticket sales and the auction are going to Abby to help Fessler fight. We’re all aware of how quickly doctor bills add up, we’re all hoping to help Abby out with that by going to this event. Keep in mind that Abby is only 28 years old and this cause is not something that’s only supporting local music, it’s about supporting her in her fight against cancer. This is an all-ages show, so bring everyone. There will also be a photo booth and a silent auction with all kinds of really great surprises. Please share this event with all of your friends, family, everyone, try to get as many people as you possibly can to come to this because we’re all fighting for Fessler and our music family needs every ounce of support that they can get.

Doors at 7:00PM, show at 8:00PM.

Check out the Facebook details.

Buy your tickets online here.

And most importantly, spread the news around so that our friends can raise as much money as possible!

Passion Pit – Take A Walk

I needed a little pick me up on this rainy Monday morning, and luckily Passion Pit had just what I needed. They just released their new song “Take a Walk” on their site, and you can listen for free! I can’t wait for their next album to come out, or their show at Red Rocks (it will be amazing).

Take a listen for yourself:

Hopefully that will help brighten your Monday like it did mine!

Featured Band: The Say So

Down here at Indie Bitches we get to have some of the greatest experiences, from going to numerous shows in the Denver Metro area all the way to getting to listen to tracks before they’re officially released. Thanks to alternative rock band The Say So, we were able to recieve a couple copies of their first CD before anyone else, set to be released on Friday, June 8th at The Hi-Dive with Take To The Oars (we sure do seem to mention these guys a lot) and Eldren. The Say So is a four part Denver-based band consisting of members Sean Palmer (vocals, guitar), Noah Fisher (guitar), Chris Beeble (bass), and Rob Spradling (drums). I’ve spent the better half of 3 days going back and forth to their new cd, “The Romantic”, and previous releases such as “En Plein Air” and “Something Like Wind”. After listening to “The Romantic” at least four times, I’ve come to one strong conclusion – this album is a new side of The Say So. It’s very clear that “The Romantic” was an album that had a lot of love and thought put into it, it’s vividly apparent in the more matured sound displayed.

Last year after I discovered The Say So at a show with The Epilogues in August at Summit Music Hall, I fell in absolute love with their song “Inside” on the EP “En Plein Air”. I started doing a little more research over the months and saw them again, with The Epilogues, on March 24th this year.  If you’ve never been a show for The Say So, put it on your bucket list. The combination of lively energy that they display is enough to grab anyones attention, the system of lighting that they have designed is more than enough to do just that. The Say So themselves made two lightboards and four LED towers made out of, and I kid you not, old see-through shoe boxes that put out over 300 watts of electricity in the form of light, all completely syncopated with their songs. It’s one thing to go to a show and have a band that catches your ear, but these guys have really grasped the concept of holding the attention of the audience in the palm of their hands. I’m extremely excited for these gentlemen to be releasing their first full-length CD in June, something that they’ve been working on for well over 2 years.

When talking to Sean, lead singer of The Say So, I felt like the most important question to ask was simply why they decided to name the album “The Romantic”, here was his response: “When it came time to name the album, it was just really apparent to us that it had to be called The Romantic. That title embodies everything about the album. The lyrics, the art direction, the stories, musically and melodically…it just fits. It doesn’t just play off the whole ‘love vibe’ between two people, which is kind of an obvious theme in a lot of the songs we write. It represents the battle in which any person has who fully divulges themselves into their art whether it be music, a relationship, writing, their job, anything really, and we felt that way when writing and recording the album so…it stuck.”

Without telling too much detail, I’ll say that “The Romantic” is a lusty combination of modern indie-alternative rock and heartfelt lyrics that have indulged in the feelings of love and heartbreak, things that every romantic experiences. I expect their release to, without a doubt, be a mind-blowing experience that’s going to capture the hearts and ears of all different sides of the Denver music scene. Make sure you mark your calendars and get your $8 presale tickets now, it would be absolutely no surprise to me if this show sold out. In the slight chance that you can’t make their CD release, definitely make sure that you see them play at Sean and Pete’s farewell show with The Heyday on May 12th at The Marquis, also featuring Sam Lee. Lovedrug + Take to the Oars + Post Paradise = Amazing Denver Night

On Tuesday, May 1, two of our local favorites will be opening for Lovedrug at the Hi-Dive in Denver. This is definitely a show you don’t want to miss.

We have blogged about Take to the Oars many, many times before, but we still can’t get enough of them! Can you blame us? Take a look at their video for Bar Talk:

But also opening for Lovedrug is Post Paradise, Monika’s current band crush.

How could you not love a cello rock band? Listen to this and tell me you don’t love it:

Then there is the headliner, Lovedrug. They remind me of Manchester Orchestra with a little Mute Math mixed in. I am really looking forward to seeing these guys, I hope they sound as good live as they do on their album.

I love how they came up with the name, too. Lead singer, Michael Shepard, left music originally to go to film school, but his first love of music dragged him back. According to him, the term Lovedrug is a verb, not an aphrodisiac.

Tickets are only $10, how could you pass up this show? Be sure to get there early so you don’t miss Post Paradise!

Opinion: A Different Side Of Ke$ha

I’m not one of those huge Ke$ha fans, actually you could say that maybe I don’t like her at all, but today I was reading a review done by Denver Westword on a collaboration that she did with The Flaming Lips, suggesting that it was “2012’s most unexpectedly great collaboration”. Clearly I’m a bit biased on this simply because I’ve never really taken Ke$ha’s music career seriously. Even reading the things that she posts on her Twitter account really made me question what the hell this woman was trying to achieve. I fully understand that in this industry, as a musician, you have to keep people on their toes so that they won’t get bored with you and Ke$ha has definitely done that. The amount of people that love her is pretty equal to those that dislike her…and I think today I might be somewhere in the middle rather than on the strongly dislike side. Colorado’s very own 3OH!3 even did a collaboration with her a couple of years ago with their song “My First Kiss“, which actually happens to be a song I’m pretty fond of.

Anyways, I was listening to this collaboration that Ke$ha and The Flaming lips did, “You Must Be Upgraded“, and it didn’t exactly hook me in on becoming a Ke$ha fan. After reading more of this Westword article, they mentioned her doing a cover of one of my favorites, Bob Dylan’s song “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright“. Now please understand that I’m extremely anti-covers, especially when it comes to the perfection of Bob Dylan. There are a couple covers that I like including Fiona Apple’s cover of The Beatles song, “Across The Universe” (the only Beatles cover I will ever approve of), and of course the Denver band Places’  fantastic cover of “Round Here” by Counting Crows, which I will daringly say I think is better than the original (sorry Sam Lee). After going through YouTube to find this cover that Ke$ha did (very hesitantly searching) to see if this Bob Dylan cover was something that might be something that I like…I found it and was pleasantly surprised. Westword is absolutely right when they say that Ke$ha cutting down the autotune is something that’s done her a lot of justice, because this is a completely different side of her that I strongly approve of. I am by no means saying that this cover of Ke$ha singing Bob Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright” is better than the original, but it’s pretty damn good. I highly encourage you to check it out or at least try to give it a chance like I did, you might be shocked in the complete 180 of her voice.

Check it out:

Is anyone else as surprised as I am to say that this really isn’t a bad cover?

Civil Twilight w/ Churchill at The Bluebird 4/25

In case you didn’t already know, one of our favorite local Denver bands, Churchill, will be playing a show tonight at The Bluebird with Civil Twilight. Churchill is also getting ready to play a couple of shows with well-known Denver locals The Fray on the 29th at The Palladium Ballroom and 30th at Stubbs Barbeque in Texas, which is already sold out. Monika and I have had such a strong love for Churchill’s sound, there was no surprise when they were announced as the winners of KTCL’s “Hometown for the Holidays” at Casselman’s last year on December 17th. They’ve continued to wow us with their performances, I remember seeing Churchill at The UMS last year and practically drooling over their performance. The show tonight starts at 8PM, doors at 7PM, and tickets are only $15.00, which is absolutely going to be worth every last penny of what this performance is bound to create. Last year I was lucky enough to get a couple free downloads of cover songs that Churchill had done, including my personal favorite “Standards” originally by Denver locals, Meese. Listen to the track here:

And make sure that you come out to the show tonight, it’s going to be a wonderful concert and I know that this is a concert that will change your life like the first time I experienced Churchill live. Word on the street is that they have a pretty big announcement after the show, be there so you’re the first to hear the news!

Tellerpalooza 2012

Started in 2004, the ninth annual Tellerpalooza is nearing! Tellerpalooza is one of Denver’s biggest elementary school fundraisers, if you were wondering what Teller was and why this is such a palooza, we’re here to explain it to you. On Saturday, May 5th, at The Mercury Cafe, Teller Elementary will be holding it’s biggest event of the year to help raise money with the help of Denver local bands, a bake sale, and the very popular “Wall of Wine”  where you have the chance to earn a box of assorted favorites from Teller parents. This year features the likes of some of our favorite Denver musicians including Bop Skizzum, Jaden Carlson, My Body Sings Electric, Popcult, and Nautical Mile. Come and celebrate local music with us while helping out a great cause! Both Monika and I plan on being there to support Teller Elementary as well as our beloved local musicians. We’re pretty excited to get to experience the Denver music scene in a different light while at the same time helping to contribute to such a great cause: the education of our future generations. Make sure that you join us if you’re wanting to have one of the best times of your life, this is an event that isn’t going to want to be missed, after all, it’s for the children!
